About

We are new, and we would rather say so.

Chapters is a small company with a method, a short list of couples we are designing for, and a growing number of volumes written for real ones. We have been to a good many places. We have not been to all of the ones we write about — and where we have not, we say so.

How we know things

Sourced, not remembered.

When a volume says to ask for a corner room in the Zabriskie House because they catch the water on two sides, that is because we asked — the property, the floor plan, the people who stayed there last month. It is not a memory of standing in one.

We think that distinction matters enough to print. Plenty of travel writing is done from a desk; almost none of it says so.

So we do not publish a list of everywhere. We publish the editions we have actually written, and the rest stays where it is useful — inside the engine, waiting for a couple to match it.

What we don’t do

The short list.

No group trips.
No destination we cannot source properly.
No compatibility score. NOT ONE
No place we have not read against all eight lines.

The last one is the work, and it is the only one that costs us anything. When we put a place in front of you it is because of your shape — not because it was the one we happened to know.

How we are paid

One way.

The design is free this year. When we book a hotel, the hotel pays us a commission — as it does every travel advisor. That is the whole of it.

It does not decide where we send you. If the right place for the two of you pays us nothing, you will still get the right place.

Read one and judge it on the writing.

It is the only fair test of a company this new.
